Weekend preview: Summit quarterfinals

It’s tournament time as Sioux Falls will host the Summit League playoffs for the fifth year in a row starting Saturday. In keeping with the format we used during the regular season, here is what a look South Dakota State faces in the first round.

And, yes, I’ll be at the Arena throughout the tournament. Our coverage gets going in ernest Friday with the release of our annual preview section followed by a live preview show. Those will continue daily during the event. More details later.

Men
No. 1 SDSU (22-9) vs. No. 8 IUPUI (6-25), 6 p.m.

Streaks and such: SDSU has won six in a row in the series, including a first-round affair in last year’s tournament, while IUPUI has lost 15 in a row
Of note: The game will air in Midco Sports Net and Fox College Sports. … SDSU is No. 19 in this week’s mid-major poll. … The Jacks won this year’s regular-season meetings with the Jags by scores of 80-65 on the road and 82-45 in Brookings. … IUPUI is winless since beating Ball State and Fort Wayne on Dec. 23 and Dec. 27. An injury to guard Ian Chiles and an eligibility issue with Purdue transfer John Hart played a large part in the slide. Both were double-digit scorers. …  The Jags are led by junior center Mitch Patton (13.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and junior forward Donovan Gibbs (10.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg). … IUPUI is last in the Summit in free-throw attempts at 431. SDSU has made 424 shots from the stripe. The Jags are also last in the field in scoring defense (76.9 ppg) and rebound margin (minus-7.1). … The Jacks are 3-1 all-time in Summit League quarterfinals, including a 77-56 win over IUPUI last year.

Of note: The game will air in Midco Sports Net and Fox College Sports. … SDSU is No. 16 in the latest mid-major poll. …  OU is 10-3 in Summit quarterfinals, but this is its first time as the No. 8 seed. … The Golden Grizzlies have broken the school record for losses in a season set last year, suffering consecutive losing seasons for the first time in program history. Injuries have been instrumental in that as preseason league POY senior forward Bethany Watterworth has missed the entire season, while starting junior guard Zakiya Minifee has missed 11 games and won’t return this season. … Three of OU’s top four scorers are freshmen. SDSU only has two freshmen. … The Jacks margins of victory in quarterfinal play: 28, 41, 11 and 21.
