Tuesday (Tourney) Tidbits
It’s an NCAA basketball tournament-centric edition of Tuesday Tidbits:
The official seeds in the men’s tournament have SDSU at No. 53 out of 68. Michigan is No. 13. The winner of that game will play No. 20 VCU or No. 51 Akron.
Season stats for SDSU recruit guard Anders Broman heading into the Minnesota state tournament: 41.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 5.1 steals per game. He’s shooting 58.1 percent from the field 48.8 percent from 3-point range and 91.9 percent from the line.
Meanwhile, classmate Lane Severyn scored 24 points in leading Pierre to its first Class AA state title since 1982.
Jacks coach Scott Nagy was thrilled to see LaSalle make the field as an at-large bid. Why? He was a graduate assistant at Illinois along with Explorers coach John Giannini.
Based on the Sagarin Ratings, the SDSU women are 12-point underdogs against South Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Boulder. Strangely, the Jacks are unbeaten against SEC foes, topping Kentucky and Alabama in recent years.
Three Summit League women’s teams wound up reaching the postseason: SDSU to the NCAAs, regular-season runner-up IUPUI to the WNIT and tourney runner-up South Dakota to the WBI.
Every team that beat SDSU this season earned a postseason berth. Meanwhile, former Summit member Oral Roberts got into the Dance by winning the Southland Conference tournament.
Tickets for the Jacks-Gamecocks game at Colorado are available online through this link. No. 5 Colorado faces No. 12 Kansas in the other game in the four-team pod.
No. 13 seeds are 6-70 in first-round games since the field was expanded in 1994. SDSU was a 13 last year, too, falling 83-68 at Purdue.
