The latest developments from South Dakota State fall camp, which is closing in on the end of Week 2:
The Jacks will scrimmage - with officials on hand - Saturday morning in the first of two workouts.
A pretty good chunk of SDSU players (seniors, juniors and sophomores) are on the radar of at least one NFL scouting site – NFLDraftScout.com – heading into the season. They are, listed in order based on ranking within position and class:
24. Austin Sumner, Jr., QB
37. Zach Zenner, Jr., RB
46. T.J. Lally, So., LB
64. Winston Wright, Sr., CB
66. Doug Peete, Sr., DE
74. Bryan Witzmann, Sr., OT
104. Marshall Peugh, Sr., DE
Three others - Ethan Sawyer, Jr., P; Chase Douglas, Sr., DT; Alex Parker, Sr., OL - have profiles, but no position rankings.
Dallas visits Arizona on Saturday in an NFL preseason game that will include (at least) three former SDSU players. Tight end Colin Cochart plays for the Cowboys - he has one catch through two contests - and ex-TE Steve Heiden and ex-WR Glen Fox are members of the Cardinals staff.
Every noteworthy preseason poll in the FCS is out, and SDSU is in the top 10 in all but one of them: No. 4 in Lindy’s, No. 6 in the media poll, No. 7 in the coaches poll, No. 8 in the Sporting News, No. 10 in Athlon. USA Today was the only exception.
The media and coaches polls are considered the most important. This marks the first time that the Jacks were higher than ninth in either since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 2004.
How experienced is the SDSU offensive line? Of the 10 players listed on the unofficial two-deep, seven have appeared in at least 16 games. (Four of those have appeared in at least 26 games.) Four are seniors and four are juniors. The exceptions? Redshirt freshmen Mike Shoff (6-6, 320) and Nick Carr (6-8, 290).
